THUNDERBOLTS* Non-Spoiler Review

Review Grade: A

Thunderbolts* has unexpectedly become one of the best Marvel movies since Endgame.

Like everyone else, I’ve watched the trailers, that seemed to have a plucky charm to it. I knew there was going to be some growth from Yelena and maybe John Walker but didn’t know to what extent.

We find Yelena who has struggled since Natasha’s death in Endgame and doesn’t know her role in the world. Florence Pugh’s performance stands out so much and she definitely brings her A game. Considering her rise in popularity and several high profile performances since Black Widow, I bet Marvel is pleased with themselves in casting her so early.

I care what happens to John Walker, US Agent. The fall from grace since his time as Captain America is apparent with Wyatt Russell showing the inner turmoil this character is going through. Really impressed in making such an unlikeable character….likable.

David Harbour’s performance as Red Guardian is so essential to this movie. Somehow he is the character that keeps us grounded with hope. His playfulness and comedic tone balances this movie perfectly not to mention the heartfelt scenes with his assigned daughter Yelena. There is very much a father/daughter relationship here that shines through.

Sebastian Stan as Bucky seems to be our anchor to the rest of the MCU. All the other characters, although seen multiple times, are not as immediately recognizable as Bucky Barnes. He’s plays the team’s connection to the larger universe well.

Lewis Pullman’s Bob/ The Sentry was the most unexpected storyline. Many of us know Sentry’s origin from his comic counterpart and the fact they got this as close to the comics as they did was surprising. I more expected an unstable person, not the more real world details. Those that have seen the movies or read the comics know what I’m speaking of.

Overall this movie was great. Found myself feeling Yelena’s hurt, laughing, clapping, and just all the emotions a movie is supposed to bring out. If you have been skipping Marvel movies, this is the one to come back for.
