Since its launch, Absolute Batman has become more than just another Batman reboot; it has become one of the biggest success stories in modern comics. The series has reportedly sold close to 3 million copies on its own as part of DC’s massively successful Absolute Universe line, while the entire Absolute line crossed over 8 million units sold in its first full year. Even the very first issue of Absolute Batman exploded with nearly 400,000 copies sold across multiple printings, making it one of the best-selling comics of the modern era. Those numbers prove something important: fans are hungry for bold, darker, risk-taking superhero stories again. In an industry constantly searching for ways to bring in younger readers and reconnect older fans to comics, Absolute Batman has already proven it can move the culture, not just sell books.

That success is exactly why an animated adaptation feels inevitable. Artist Nick Dragotta has openly discussed how incredible it would be to see the series adapted into an anime by Studio Trigger, the legendary studio behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. And honestly, it makes perfect sense. Absolute Batman already feels heavily inspired by anime culture. From covers inspired by Akira to visual homages to Chainsaw Man and even imagery reminiscent of Gear 2 Luffy from One Piece, the comic embraces exaggerated action, oversized emotion, and cinematic brutality in a way that practically screams animation. Nick Dragotta’s artwork already feels animated panel-to-panel, and Studio Trigger’s explosive style could elevate Gotham City into something visually unforgettable.

Part of what makes Absolute Batman stand out is how different and terrifying this version of Gotham feels. This is not the polished billionaire Batman audiences are used to seeing. This version of Bruce Wayne is rougher, more violent, more desperate, and constantly fighting through a city that feels genuinely horrifying. Villains are redesigned to feel disturbing and monstrous, while the storytelling leans heavily into psychological horror, street violence, and emotionally grounded trauma. The action sequences are cinematic chaos, blending raw brutality with anime-inspired movement and scale. At only issue #20, the story has already introduced twisted new interpretations of classic characters, including a dangerous version of the Robins that almost feels like a militarized Power Rangers-inspired strike force hunting Batman through Gotham. Every issue continues raising the stakes while pushing Batman deeper into darkness, which is exactly the kind of storytelling modern animation audiences gravitate toward.

At the same time, James Gunn has already shown he understands the importance of animation in building the future of DC. Under Gunn’s leadership, DC Studios has expanded its animation slate with projects like Creature Commandos, Starfire, My Adventures with Green Lantern, Super Powers, and the upcoming Blue Beetle animated series, reportedly in development. Gunn has consistently embraced creator-driven storytelling and bold stylistic experimentation, which is exactly why Absolute Batman would fit perfectly into the evolving DCU landscape. An anime-inspired Batman series would not only separate itself from previous adaptations but would also help DC compete directly in a world where anime continues dominating global entertainment and streaming culture.

If DC ever gives Absolute Batman the green light for animation, it could genuinely become one of the defining animated superhero series of its generation. The combination of Scott Snyder’s dark storytelling, Nick Dragotta’s explosive visual style, anime influence, horror elements, and Gotham’s cyberpunk-inspired atmosphere creates something that feels fresh in a genre that often repeats itself. More importantly, it could introduce an entirely new generation to comics the same way shows like Batman Beyond, Batman: The Animated Series, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners created lifelong fandoms. Absolute Batman already reads like prestige animation waiting to happen, and if Studio Trigger were ever attached to the project, it could become one of the greatest DC animated adaptations ever made.

Absolute Batman is undeniable. With issue #20 officially out now, there has never been a better time to jump into the series, support your local comic book shop, and experience firsthand why so many fans believe this is one of the best stories currently being told in comic fiction today.
