If the first film was a lighthearted introduction to the Mushroom Kingdom, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a full-throttle, high-octane expansion that proves Nintendo is just getting started. This sequel is significantly more action-packed, trading origin-story setup for wall-to-wall spectacle that feels less like a traditional movie and more like a high-speed run through your favorite levels.
A Technical Masterpiece: The 8-Bit Perspective
One of the most creative sequences in the film involves how Bowser Jr. tracks the heroes. The movie features brilliant scenes where we see the action through Bowser Jr.’s screen—and it looks exactly like playing classic 8-bit Mario.

The film then flips the perspective, showing us the “real world” cinematic view of the same battle. Seeing the high-fidelity 3D action side-by-side with its retro, pixelated counterpart is a genius move. It’s a visual reminder of how far these characters have come while keeping the movie grounded in its 8-bit DNA.
A Galaxy Built on Nostalgia
The attention to detail here is staggering. From the jump, the music sets the tone—hearing the iconic Pirate Level/Airship theme swell in perfect sync with a fleet of massive flying pirate ships in the vacuum of space gave me literal chills.

The filmmakers clearly spent time digging through the NES and SNES vaults:
• The Deep Cuts: Keep your eyes peeled for Mouser (the shades-wearing, bomb-tossing boss from SMB2), the regal Queen Bee, and even R.O.B. (the “Bob” robot) making a sentient appearance.
• The Easter Eggs: In a quiet moment during the party prep for Princess Peach, you can spot an original NES console tucked in the room. There’s also a heart-melting beat featuring Toad holding a little Mario doll while standing with the Princess and a Star.
• The Visuals: Bowser Jr. is a standout threat, using his Magic Paintbrushes to create obstacles on the fly, a brilliant nod to Super Mario Sunshine.

The Arrival of Yoshi & Fox McCloud
The biggest win for this sequel is the cast expansion. We finally get Yoshi (voiced by Donald Glover), and he isn’t just a sidekick—he is a major player throughout the entire journey. Glover brings a perfect charm to the character, and seeing Yoshi’s flutter jumps and tongue-snagging abilities integrated into these massive action set pieces is pure joy.

Then, there’s the crossover of the century: Glen Powell as Fox McCloud. Powell brings a “Top Gun” level of swagger to the leader of Star Fox. His aerial dogfights add a whole different flavor of action to the movie, and his presence officially opens the door to a much larger Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

Deep Lore: The Princess Connection
For the lore hunters, this movie delivers. The film dives deep into Princess Peach’s origins without slowing down the pace. The story masterfully ties her history to Princess Rosalina, creating an emotional bridge between the Mushroom Kingdom and the stars. Seeing these two icons share the screen provides the emotional heart of the film and adds a massive layer of depth to Peach’s character.
The After-Credits: Don’t Leave Your Seat!
Whatever you do, stay through the credits. There are two major stingers that set the stage for the future:
1. The Mid-Credits Scene: We catch up with Bowser and Bowser Jr. in a high-security space prison. In a hilarious and slightly dark callback to the first movie, their prison guard is revealed to be the fan-favorite (and existential) blue star, Lumalee.
2. The Final Tease: Much like the Yoshi egg in the first film, the very last scene is a massive “wink” to the fans. I won’t reveal the character to avoid spoilers, but the way the scene plays out is a perfect cliffhanger. It confirms that the universe is getting even bigger and leaves the door wide open for a third movie.
The Verdict
While some critics have been split on the “fan-service” nature of the film, the audience reaction speaks for itself. For those of us who grew up with a controller in our hands, this movie is a masterpiece. It’s vibrant, lore-heavy, and unapologetically fun.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a love letter to the fans, and it earns every bit of its A+ rating. See it on the biggest screen possible!
