DC Comics has officially unveiled several exciting additions to its upcoming wave of Next Level titles at San Diego Comic-Con. Fresh off their critically acclaimed run on Absolute Martian Manhunter, writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodríguez are reuniting for Batman: In the Shadow of the Bat, bringing one of the hottest creative partnerships in comics to Gotham. The announcement couldn’t have come at a better time, as Rodríguez left the stage of the 2026 Eisner Awards with four trophies. Alongside Camp, Absolute Martian Manhunter won Best Limited Series; Rodríguez earned Best Penciller/Inker; and he also received recognition for his outstanding artistic work across Absolute Martian Manhunter, Batman & Robin: Year One #7, and The New Gods #8.

The success of Absolute Martian Manhunter proved that Camp and Rodríguez want to push characters into bold, genre-defining territory with emotionally layered writing and breathtaking visual storytelling. Their interpretation of Martian Manhunter became one of the standout books of the Absolute Universe, earning praise for its originality, psychological depth, and artistic ambition. Now, with Batman in their hands, expectations are understandably sky-high. Rather than simply delivering another Dark Knight story, fans can expect a fresh, visually inventive take that expands what a new Batman comic can be under this Eisner Award-winning Dynamic Duo.

With the Absolute Universe continuing to dominate sales charts and generate excitement among readers, Batman: In the Shadow of the Bat already feels like one of the most anticipated books in DC’s next publishing Next Level wave. If Camp and Rodríguez can capture even a fraction of the magic they created on Absolute Martian Manhunter, readers should prepare for another boundary-breaking masterpiece that could redefine Batman for an entirely new generation of fans.
