The wait is finally over, and it was worth every single second. Sony kicked off its latest State of Play by completely blowing the doors off Marvel’s Wolverine. If you were worried that Insomniac Games might give Logan the “friendly neighborhood” treatment they gave Spider-Man, you can officially breathe a sigh of relief.

The extended gameplay trailer proved one thing beyond a shadow of a doubt: Insomniac is letting Logan be a monster. Coming exclusively to PS5 on September 15, 2026, this is a bloody, high-octane, and deeply comic-accurate take on the iconic mutant.

Here is everything we saw that has us counting down the days until September.

Real, Raw, Unapologetic Carnage

Let’s not mince words: this game is violent. The trailer opened with Logan tailing the Reavers, a cybernetic mercenary group hunting down mutants for billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask. When the claws came out, the screen practically turned red.

Unlike the clean, web-swinging takedowns of the Spider-Man games, Wolverine’s combat is heavy, personal, and brutal. He is chopping guns in half, leaping truck-to-truck on high-speed highways, and leaving a trail of absolute wreckage.

How It Plays: The DNA of Insomniac, but Savage

You can definitely feel Insomniac’s world-class action pedigree bleeding into the mechanics, but heavily adapted for a brawler who doesn’t pull his punches:

The Traversal: He might not have web-shooters, but Logan moves with a terrifying, aggressive agility. The trailer showed him closing gaps instantly, leaping through the air to impale foes, and tearing across the map on a motorcycle.

The Rage Meter: Every parry, strike, and kill builds up Logan’s Rage. You can spend it to trigger his Healing Factor to knit wounds together in real-time, or save it for Rage Tier 3—a gorgeous, monochromatic “Black, White, and Blood” mode where Logan enters a primal, high-damage frenzy.

The Faction System: Just like fighting the Demons or Sable International in Spider-Man, Logan will be dismantling massive, distinct enemy factions. We caught glimpses of cybernetic Reavers, Trask Industries grunts, and even human-sized Sentinel variants.

A Massive, Mature X-Men Universe

Insomniac isn’t just making a solo bubble story; they are building a massive playground for mutant lore. The trailer gave us an extended look at Jean Grey, radiating a powerful purple telekinetic aura as she helps Logan lead a mutant resistance.

We also learned that Logan is reluctantly rejoining Team X—a last-stand mutant task force—after walking away three years ago. With teases of Sabretooth, Mystique, and Nightcrawler, this is shaping up to be the ultimate X-Men story.

The Suits (Because of Course!)

It wouldn’t be an Insomniac game without a spectacular wardrobe. The trailer gave a quick nod to the studio’s love for comic history by teasing unlockable costumes. Pre-orders are live today, unlocking Logan’s classic brown-and-tan comic suit (complete with reflective claws from the iconic Hulk #340 cover), alongside Digital Deluxe options like the Age of Apocalypse and Savage suits.

The Verdict

The trailer wraps on the perfect note. A rescued kid looks at a blood-splattered Logan and asks, “Are you a superhero?” Logan just glares and grunts, “No, kid. I’m Wolverine.”

Insomniac understands the assignment. They’ve taken the polished, smooth-as-butter action design they perfected with Spider-Man and dipped it in pure, unfiltered adamantium rage. September 15 cannot get here fast enough.
